We have uploaded an XTension called "Zapper" that corrects some minor problems found in QuarkXPress 3.0 after the program shipped. This XTension is available to all QuarkXPress 3.0 owners. Because we want all users to have access to this XTension, distribution is being done through all major networks (Compuserve, America On Line, CONNECT, GEnie, AppleLink) as well as through the following methods...
- All Quark authorized Service Bureaus will receive a copy.
- A copy of the "Zapper" XTension will be included in the registration gift pack that users receive after registering.
- The "Zapper" will be sent out to anyone calling technical support and requesting a copy.
The XTension is easy to use. Place it in your QuarkXPress folder on the same level with the program and launch QuarkXPress. You need to do this only once. You can then throw the XTension away.
The Zapper corrects the following problems:
- Certain pixel-based PICTs (e.g., those generated by a Datacopy scanner) were printed improperly.
- Bitmaps contained in rotated PICTs sometimes did not display correctly.
- Some Adobe Illustrator PICTs were not scaled correctly when printed.
- Certain scanners produce TIFF files that are not compliant with the TIFF 5.0 specification. These files did not display or print correctly. This problem was fixed by ignoring the faulty data in these files.
- Suppress printout did not work for anchored boxes.
- Anchored boxes could be positioned improperly in justified text.
- When Unlimited Downloadable Fonts was checked (File -> Page Setup), some fonts were either replaced by Courier or their styles were lost. This problem can also be caused by a bug in Laser Writer driver version 5.2. We recommend that you use LaserWriter driver version 6.0 or 6.0.1.
- Pasting boxes into a library on a Mac SE or Plus machine could cause a System error.
- Color pictures were not handled properly on an SE.
- A picture file locked through Get Info (File menu) in the Finder would be reported “missing” in the Picture Usage and Missing/Modified Pictures dialog boxes.
- In large documents, when Keep With Next or Keep Lines Together was applied, pages could be displayed blank onscreen, and the message "This document was created with other versions of some fonts. It will be reflowed using this System’s fonts." was sometimes given.
- PostScript Escape font was not supported properly.
Also uploaded are new import/export filters for Microsoft Word and Style Tags. These filters fix the following problems:
- Style sheets could not be appended from a Microsoft Word document (Edit -> Style Sheets).
- When an imported Microsoft Word document had style sheets with the same names as QuarkXPress style sheets, clicking Include Style Sheets (File -> Get Text) could occasionally result in a System error.
- The Style Tags filter could apply the wrong style sheet to imported tagged text.
Throw away your original Microsoft Word and Style Tag filters and replace them with the corresponding filters from the upload. The new Style Tags filter is contained in a folder called "New Style Filter." (Place this filter in the same folder as your QuarkXPress program only if you are using Style Tags. You should not install this filter if you are currently using XPress Tags.)
We regret any inconvenience these problems may have caused you.
